The Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in a field broadly related to sedimentary processes and the evolution of Earth's surface. We seek creative colleagues working to understand connections between Earth’s surface dynamics and deep-Earth, ocean, climate, and/or biological systems. Paleontological Society Early Career Grants

The Paleontological Society supports research for early-career paleontologists. The deadline for such two early-career grants is February 1, 2020 and we encourage you to consider applying for either, or passing this along to colleagues who you think may be interested in applying.

Arthur James Boucot Research Grants

The Arthur James Boucot Research Grants support early-career paleontologists in the fields of morphology, taxonomy, and biostratigraphy, working on any taxa, preferably with some combination of these approaches and a significant fieldwork component. Arthur James Boucot Research Grants support original research by current postdoctoral students, assistant professors (pre-tenure), and other early career paleontologists with a PhD, with the possible exception of an occasional individual deemed to be unusually qualified. Paleontologists must be associated with universities, institutes, and academies of science, or equivalent institutions.

Norman Newell Grants

The Norman Newell Grants complement the Arthur Boucot grants, and preference is therefore given to research projects in areas not covered by the Arthur Boucot grant topical areas. Eligible applicants include paleontologists who completed their Ph.D. within the last five years and who are members in good standing of the Paleontological Society.


Applicants can only apply to one of these Early Career Grants per funding year. To broaden the reach of Paleontological Society funds, recipients of a Norman Newell grant may not apply for an Arthur Boucot grant, nor may they apply for a second Norman Newell grant. Similarly, recipients of an Arthur Boucot grant may not apply for a Norman Newell grant.

Assistant Professor (Zoology/Paleontology), University of Wisconsin, River Falls

The University of Wisconsin, River Falls, is seeking a zoologist or paleontologist. Specific expertise could be in anatomy, ecology, systematics, evolution, wildlife, or another related field. Vertebrate (non-human) specialty in zoology is preferred, but others are encouraged to apply. The ability to teach an undergraduate paleontology course is required.

Minimum Education and Experience
The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a PhD in microbiology or a related field. We recognize the modern view of microbiology is broad and includes but is not limited to, field microbiology, health microbiology, and applied and industrial microbiology. Candidates nearing completion of the terminal degree may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the degree must be met no later than August 17, 2020. Additional Requirements and Responsibilities for this position
This position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service. Teaching assignments total 10-14 class hours per week and includes, at a minimum, majors’ introductory microbiology lecture and lab (BIOL 371W), which focuses heavily on bacteria. In addition, based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department, the candidate might participate in other majors’ courses ranging from lower-division undergraduate to graduate courses, or alternatively a non-majors’ introductory microbiology course. Scholarship duties include developing an externally-funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate students, supported by a startup package including research space, equipment and supply funding, and partial release time from teaching in the first two years of the appointment. Service duties include undergraduate advising of microbiology and biology majors, and committee work.

Assistant Professor (tenure track) Paleoclimate Sedimentology - University of Lausanne

The successful candidate will develop a vigorous, independent, externally-funded research program that complements existing strengths in SEOS. It is also expected that the candidate will supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to introductory geology, tectonics, sedimentology, geochemistry, geological field schools and/or other core geology areas. A PhD is required at the time of evaluation and post-doctoral experience is desirable. Commensurate with their career stage, qualified candidates must have an excellent record of research published in or in preparation for leading scientific journals. Three Tenure-Track Geoscience Faculty Positions at UBC

The Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, invites outstanding applicants for one full-time, tenure-track faculty position in each of the three following fields:
1) Sedimentary geology: We seek a sedimentary geologist who integrates field- and laboratory-based research to investigate sedimentological processes and the evolution of sedimentary basins. Demonstrated ability to apply such research as is, or integrated with other earth science fields to gain novel insights into the tectonic evolution of Earth's crust is an asset. The ideal candidate will excel at teaching clastic sedimentology and field school in the undergraduate Geology program.
2) Earth surface processes: We seek a geoscientist who uses the field laboratory to formulate and test hypotheses to elucidate the processes that shape the Earth's (near-) surface. The position targets fields at the interface between the solid Earth and its surface environment, such as, geomorphology, neotectonics, soil system science and fluid-rock interaction. The ideal candidate will significantly contribute to field-based undergraduate teaching in the Geology program.
3) Earth system science: We seek a cross-disciplinary geoscientist who uses an innovative combination of field, analytical and numerical methods to investigate the mechanisms operating in the Earth system, past or present. Candidates whose research profile would demonstrably bridge between our existing strengths in earth, ocean and atmospheric science are specifically encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will teach across our undergraduate geoscience programs.

The positions are at the rank of Assistant Professor, although it is possible that a position could be offered at a higher rank for an applicant with exceptional qualifications. A PhD degree is required and postdoctoral experience is considered important. Candidates are expected to develop a strong, externally funded and internationally recognized research program, successfully supervise graduate students, effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and participate in departmental activities

Full Professor in Geobiology (Tenure Track W2/W3) University of Cologne

This call is part of the Federal Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States. It addresses researchers at an early career stage. The successful candidate is expected to develop research and teaching programs in the field of geobiology at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy. Grounded in basic geoscientific research, the focus of a future geobiological research program may range from paleobiology through earth and life history to geomicrobiology. The University of Kansas invites applications for the Thomas N. Taylor assistant professor and assistant curator in Paleobotany. This position is a full-time, tenure-track academic year joint appointment in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB, 0.5 FTE) and the Biodiversity Institute (BI, 0.5 FTE), a KU Designated Research Center. "Soft Rock" Geologist wanted at Cornell College
