Tenure Track position at Penn State in a field broadly related to sedimentary processes and the evolution of Earth's surface

The Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in a field broadly related to sedimentary processes and the evolution of Earth's surface. We seek creative colleagues working to understand connections between Earth’s surface dynamics and deep-Earth, ocean, climate, and/or biological systems. We are especially interested in applicants whose research, teaching, and diversity efforts would complement existing departmental strengths in geobiology, geochemistry, and geophysics.

The Department of Geosciences is part of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, which houses research programs spanning a broad range of Earth and planetary science, including the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute and the Energy Institute. Successful applicants will be expected to engage with our community by developing vigorous, externally funded research programs, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, and working to advance diversity in geosciences. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in geosciences or related field at the time of appointment.

Assistant Professor (tenure track) Paleoclimate Sedimentology - University of Lausanne

The Faculty of Geosciences and the Environment (FGSE) of the University of Lausanne invites applications for a professorship in Paleoclimate Sedimentology, to be based in the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTE).

We are looking for an excellent sedimentologist who focuses on the reconstruction of past climate changes (including sedimentary, paleoclimate, biological and paleoceanography changes) at geological timescales using the stratigraphic and sedimentary record. We seek a candidate who can provide an innovative interpretation of sedimentary archives, using laboratory, and field techniques and reconstructing Earth system history. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in geology, a strong commitment to field-based research and a willingness to contribute to field-based teaching.

The successful candidate will actively participate in the research activities of the Institute of Earth Sciences, will teach in the Bachelor of Geosciences and Environment and in relevant Masters taught by the FGSE, and will supervise masters and doctoral students.

Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level (tenure track). However, exceptionally, we will consider outstanding candidates for direct appointment to the Associate or Ordinary Professor level, notably if this corresponds with our equal opportunity objectives.

Sedimentology Position at UT Austin (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor)

Description
The Department of Geological Sciences in the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking to hire a faculty member in Sedimentary Geology at the Assistant, Associate or Full professor level. We seek a creative individual who has an innovative research program in sedimentary geology and addresses questions related to clastic sedimentation, dynamic stratigraphy, depositional systems, and basin architecture over geological time scales, with broad applicability to the energy industry. A demonstrated ability to integrate a range of approaches and data types is required, potentially including field-based inquiry, linked surface and subsurface investigations, incorporation of seismic data, and analytical or modeling approaches. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an internationally recognized research program and excel at teaching, mentoring, and service roles within the department, and should have a strong record of securing external research funds. We seek an individual who facilitates collaborations among faculty, researchers, and students in the department and university, and is capable of teaching courses over a wide range of geoscience topics, particularly courses in stratigraphy, sedimentology, and basin analysis.

Tenure-Track Faculty Position (Sedimentary Geology), Iowa State University

Assistant Professor in sed/strat and/or paleobiology, Towson University, MD

The College of Jess and Mildred Fisher College of Science and Mathematics invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences beginning August 2019.

Qualifications:
PhD in a relevant area is required. Postdoctoral experience is preferred. Possess a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, show potential for a productive research/scholarly program, and pursue external funding to support research programs involving undergraduate and graduate students. Preference will be given to candidates with research and teaching interests in the areas of sedimentology and stratigraphy and/or paleobiology. Responsibilities:

Faculty are assigned an instructional workload of six (6) course units per academic year for the first year. Beginning the second year the workload reverts back to the standard instructional workload of seven to eight (7-8) course units per academic year, with the possibility of a decrease in instructional workload based upon research needs. This position supports the Geology program with the potential to interact with students in the interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate programs in Environmental Science and Studies. Teaching responsibilities will include introductory and upper–level geology courses and may include graduate–level environmental science courses. The candidate will likely teach a graduate-level environmental geology course in alternate years.

PhD Research Fellowship in Paleontology/Sedimentology - Natural History Museum, University of Oslo

Job description
Applications are invited for a 3 year position in a Research Fellowship as PhD Candidate in Paleontology/Sedimentology to be based at the the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo. Starting date no later than August 2018, assuming agreement on external funding. The candidate will study Triassic biofacies with both organic rich sediment (anoxic deposit) and beds with extensive bioturbation and invertebrate fauna, with focus on the Middle Triassic Botneheia Formation in Svalbard.

The aim of the PhD is to improve our understanding of the paleoenvironment of the High Boreal Triassic, integrating paleontology with sedimentology and organic geochemistry. The project will involve field and laboratory work, taxonomic description, statistical and ecological analysis. The project is organized within the ARCEx Program and is a cooperation between the University of Oslo, several other Norwegian universities, and the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). The candidate will be part of an active Triassic research group in Oslo.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in geology and have extensive field experience. Specialization in sedimentology or paleontology will be an advantage. The candidate must participate in field work in August 2018, and must be physically fit to work in the Arctic.

Join Appointment (Professor) in Geomicrobiology of sedimentary systems - Dijon, France

Within a joint appointment scheme, the University Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC, www.ubfc.fr) is recruiting a high reputation senior researcher in the field of geomicrobiology of sedimentary systems , specifically in the laboratory Biogeosciences (http://biogeosciences.u-bourgogne.fr/en/), hosted by Université de Bourgogne, and located in Dijon (France). This position is supported by the French “Investissements d’Avenir” program, project ISITE-BFC. We encourage applications of well-established scientists investigating this field of research owning a PhD degree, leading a prestigious research group in another university or in a research organization, demonstrating an outstanding record of publications and the proven ability to manage a research program involving a large group of researchers.

During a period of three years, the successful applicant will be offered a joint appointment position to be negotiated with their home institution. During this period, she/he will manage a 600 k€ grant (including her/his joint appointment salary and research, accommodation and travel budget) for a period of three years. The salary will be negotiated on the basis of scientific reputation and experience. It integrates a benefit package including retirement, health insurance, annual and sick leave. Job description:
About the hosting research team The Biogeosciences Research Unit is a research community currently comprising more than 100 members, including full-time researchers from the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research), Assistant Professors and Professors from the University of Burgundy and from the EPHE (Ecole Pratique de Hautes Etudes), post-doctoral fellows, doctoral students and technical staff. Biogeosciences is a multi- and inter-disciplinary research unit dedicated to the study of biosphere/geosphere interactions and to evolutionary biology. The major scientific questions addressed are: How do biological processes interact with geological, environmental and climatic processes? What are the relevant spatial and temporal scales at which these processes operate? These questions are studied with a wide array of extant and fossil organisms and at levels of biological integration ranging from the individual to the entire biosphere. The laboratory is built around five interacting research teams whose scientific activities are deeply anchored into the fields of sedimentology, microbiology, environmental sciences, climatology, palaeontology and evolutionary ecology/biology.

Targeted profile
Microbialite ecosystems have existed for billions of years and can provide insight in the past functioning of our planet. Specifically, these model ecosystems can provide information pertaining the main natural mechanisms controlling carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere as well as insight in major structural and ecological processes in modern and past ecosystems. Moreover, microbialites deposits are characteristic reservoirs of multiple recent oil discoveries (e.g., subsalt reservoirs) revealing their global scale and economic importance. Finally, microbialite research plays a pivotal role in the emerging field of astrobiology.
The coaching project shall be highly ambitious and shall target the unprecedented integration of interdisciplinary information at increasing spatial and temporal scales. The experience and expertise of an international coach shall provide the opportunity to set up a long-term scientific group with a top expertise in the large and competitive field of geobiology. Specifically, the coach shall provide streamlines to increase the impact potential of recent recruitments in the hosting team. Indeed, several researchers within the Biogeosciences Research Unit conduct research on fossil and modern microbialites with a broad focus on sedimentology, (bio)geochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, geomicrobiology, and mineralogy. Their main objectives are: (1) to refine the understanding of microbial mat and microbialite formation in modern sedimentary environments, using analogical and natural models; (2) to better understand the physical and biological factors involved in their preservation; (3) to highlight the importance of microbial structures over geological times (e.g. fossilization processes, geochemical cycles, …)

Assistant professor in Paleontology/Sedimentology - Oklahoma State

The Boone Pickens School of Geology at Oklahoma State University seeks to fill a tenure track position in paleontology/sedimentary geology at the rank of assistant professor. Postdoc in Paleoecology or Sedimentary Geology- University of Helsinki

The global biodiversity has changed dramatically during the past 550 million years of earth history with pronounced extinction events and times of spectacular diversifications. One hypothetical biotic driving mechanism of long-term change is ecological engineering (EE). In our project we will test predictions based on EE hypothesis by the example of the marine carbonate platforms of the early Paleozoic era (541–444 m.y.a.). During this time carbonate sediments globally expanded in neritic marine environments and at the same time marine organisms diversified rapidly. Because these carbonate platforms were built almost exclusively by benthic organisms we hypothesize that the development of carbonate platforms is an example of EE and that the biodiversification is partly causally linked with biologically driven habitat diversification. In a combined effort of an international team of geologists, ecologists, and paleontologists we will test with statistical, geochemical and stratigraphical methods if the early Paleozoic diversification is linked with coeval changes in marine benthic habitats.

The postdoctoral researcher will be employed on a full-time, fixed term, three-year contract with a four-month probation. The successful candidate will join an actively growing BioGeoScience Community at the University of Helsinki and will be part of the scientific community at both the Finnish Museum of Natural History and at the Department of Geosciences and Geography at the University of Helsinki. The successful candidate will also likely collaborate with Seth Finnegan (University of California, Berkeley), Lee Hsiang Liow (University of Oslo), and Melanie Hopkins (American Museum of Natural History).

They are seeking a highly motivated researcher with strong quantitative skills to work on one of the following themes: Analytical paleontology, macroecology, community ecology, and the statistical tools in paleobiological research, Carbonate sedimentology, carbonate sequence stratigraphy, basin analysis. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience either in paleobiological research or in carbonate sedimentology. However, as our research is cross-disciplinary it is possible to contribute coming from several different fields. Thus, we welcome applications from exceptional candidates, with a quantitative background, from other fields. However, it is essential to have a genuine interest in the interplay of global change in climate, sea-level and biodiversity. It is also important for the candidate to have strong programming skills and experience in working with large data sets.

Assistant Professor in Carbonate Sedimentology- Trinity College Dublin

This Assistant Professor appointment will be in the broad field of Carbonate Sedimentology. The appointee will contribute to undergraduate teaching, research and student supervision in the School. The successful candidate will develop an active externally funded programme of research linked to Earth and Environment an interdisciplinary research theme in the School. The Discipline of Geology at Trinity College Dublin is committed to education that emphasizes the importance of field-based investigation and observational skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate their experience in both teaching and conducting field-based sedimentology, together with laboratory-based microscopic description of sedimentary rocks.

Join us at the 2017 International Workshop on Konservat-Lagerstatten from July 15-16 2017 in Cork (Ireland). This workshop will explore frontier research on fossil deposits preserving soft tissues of animals and plants and includes an exciting line-up of invited speakers.
