Cluster Hire in Terrestrial Geo-Biosphere Interactions, University of Tübingen

The Department of Geosciences at the University of Tübingen, Germany, announces the opening of four full professorships (W3) as part of a new cluster hire in the field of Terrestrial Geo-Biosphere interactions. The chosen candidates are expected to develop internationally visible research programs that integrate geoscience research with modern and past biologic and climate processes. We are particularly interested in candidates who can bridge between disciplines and investigate processes active on both recent (human-relevant) and geologic timescales. The candidates are expected to link their research to existing department strengths in geosciences, applied and environmental sciences, geoecology, geography, and also biology-related University units such as the Institute for Ecology and Evolution; Center for Molecular and Plant Biology (ZMBP), and the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology. Connections are also desirable to current University expertise in the area of ‘Machine Learning for Science’ through a University Cluster of Excellence, and through the Senckenberg Center for Human Evolution and Paleoenvironments (HEP) at the University of Tübingen. Teaching should contribute to the programs of Geosciences (BSc and MSc), Geoecology (BSc and MSc), Environmental Sciences (BSc), and Applied and Environmental Geoscience (MSc).

We welcome applications for the following positions:
  1. Professor (W3) of Climatology and the Biosphere (Klimatologie und Biosphäre): The preferred candidate will conduct research on terrestrial modern- and paleo-climate with expertise in one or more of the following areas: quantitative analysis of (paleo)climate data, terrestrial climate reconstructions from novel chemical and/or organismic proxy methods, and records of past climate and vegetation change from the Pleistocene to present. Teaching contributions will be in the broad areas of a BSc co- taught course on Biology for Geoscientists, and MSc courses Climate Dynamics, (Paleo)climate methods and analysis, and also a field excursions/mapping course.
  2. Professor (W3) of Terrestrial Sedimentology (Terrestrische Sedimentologie): We seek candidates with expertise in the broad areas of terrestrial sedimentology and interactions between sedimentology, climate, and the biosphere. Applications from candidates with expertise in process sedimentology or analysis of the geologic record using field based, geochemical, geophysical, biologic, or analog or numerical modeling techniques are welcome. Teaching contributions will include classroom and field- based BSc-level instruction in sedimentology; field excursions or mapping courses; and regional geology.
  3. Professor (W3) of Near-Surface Geophysics (Geophysik der nahen Erdoberfläche): The chosen candidate is expected to have expertise in observational geophysics and diverse geophysical imaging techniques near the Earth’s surface and critical zone. We seek persons who investigate terrestrial environmental change related to geologic, climate, and biologic processes. Teaching contributions will be in BSc and MSc level courses in solid Earth and Environmental Geophysics. Student instruction in field based geophysical techniques is expected, as is a MSc level course in advanced geophysics.
  4. Professor (W3) of Geo-Biosphere Interactions (Geo-Biosphären-Wechselwirkungen): We seek candidates who investigate interactions and couplings between the Earth’s surface and biota over either modern or geologic timescales. Fields of study could include (but are not limited to): ecohydrology; rhizosphere processes; vegetation-atmosphere-hydrosphere interactions; surface water hydrology; global biogeochemical cycles; biogeography; vegetation dynamics, biodiversity and climate or geologic processes; or nutrient and element cycling. Techniques used can include: geochemical, molecular, physiological, geophysical, field or greenhouse studies, or analog/numerical modeling experiments. Teaching contributions will include BSc and MSc courses in the candidate’s area of research, including a co-taught BSc course in Biology for Geoscientists, and field excursions.
Teaching requirements for all positions are 9 hours/week during semesters including student advising/supervision. Teaching obligations should include contributions to both BSc and MSc courses. Teaching of MSc courses should be in English. BSc courses can initially be taught in English.

Required qualifications for all positions include a PhD or equivalent international degree and postdoctoral qualifications equivalent to the requirements for tenure. This includes evidence of teaching effectiveness.

The Department of Geological Sciences in the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking to hire a faculty member in Sedimentary Geology at the Assistant, Associate or Full professor level. We seek a creative individual who has an innovative research program in sedimentary geology and addresses questions related to clastic sedimentation, dynamic stratigraphy, depositional systems, and basin architecture over geological time scales, with broad applicability to the energy industry. A demonstrated ability to integrate a range of approaches and data types is required, potentially including field-based inquiry, linked surface and subsurface investigations, incorporation of seismic data, and analytical or modeling approaches. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an internationally recognized research program and excel at teaching, mentoring, and service roles within the department, and should have a strong record of securing external research funds. We seek an individual who facilitates collaborations among faculty, researchers, and students in the department and university, and is capable of teaching courses over a wide range of geoscience topics, particularly courses in stratigraphy, sedimentology, and basin analysis.

Professor of Paleontology, UHOH Stuttgart State Museum of Natural History

The University of Hohenheim’s (UHOH) Faculty of Natural Sciences invites applications for the position of a Full Professor (W3) of Paleontology to be filled in the Institute of Biology, which is to be newly established. At the State Museum of Natural History (SMNS), the position is to be filled as the Director of the Paleontology Department.

The joint position is to be filled by the SMNS and the UHOH as a double appointment according to the “Jülich Model”. This means that the appointment at the University includes granting an immediate leave of absence to fulfill duties at the SMNS. The position is initially limited to five years with the possibility of an extension as a permanent contract.

The SMNS is one of Germany’s most renowned natural science research museums and cooperates closely with the UHOH in research and academic teaching.

Join Appointment (Professor) in Geomicrobiology of sedimentary systems - Dijon, France

Within a joint appointment scheme, the University Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC, www.ubfc.fr) is recruiting a high reputation senior researcher in the field of geomicrobiology of sedimentary systems , specifically in the laboratory Biogeosciences (http://biogeosciences.u-bourgogne.fr/en/), hosted by Université de Bourgogne, and located in Dijon (France). This position is supported by the French “Investissements d’Avenir” program, project ISITE-BFC. We encourage applications of well-established scientists investigating this field of research owning a PhD degree, leading a prestigious research group in another university or in a research organization, demonstrating an outstanding record of publications and the proven ability to manage a research program involving a large group of researchers.

During a period of three years, the successful applicant will be offered a joint appointment position to be negotiated with their home institution. During this period, she/he will manage a 600 k€ grant (including her/his joint appointment salary and research, accommodation and travel budget) for a period of three years. The salary will be negotiated on the basis of scientific reputation and experience. It integrates a benefit package including retirement, health insurance, annual and sick leave. During the same period, the successful candidate will be committed to spend at least 2 months per year to coach and manage a research group in the above-mentioned laboratory. More specifically, during this period, she/he will be also committed to coach every year at least one researcher of the above-mentioned laboratory to apply for an European Research Council (ERC) grant. At mid-term of the three years period, a go/no go evaluation will assess the effectiveness of the joint appointment.

Job description:
About the hosting research team The Biogeosciences Research Unit is a research community currently comprising more than 100 members, including full-time researchers from the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research), Assistant Professors and Professors from the University of Burgundy and from the EPHE (Ecole Pratique de Hautes Etudes), post-doctoral fellows, doctoral students and technical staff. Biogeosciences is a multi- and inter-disciplinary research unit dedicated to the study of biosphere/geosphere interactions and to evolutionary biology. The major scientific questions addressed are: How do biological processes interact with geological, environmental and climatic processes? What are the relevant spatial and temporal scales at which these processes operate? These questions are studied with a wide array of extant and fossil organisms and at levels of biological integration ranging from the individual to the entire biosphere. The laboratory is built around five interacting research teams whose scientific activities are deeply anchored into the fields of sedimentology, microbiology, environmental sciences, climatology, palaeontology and evolutionary ecology/biology.

Targeted profile
Microbialite ecosystems have existed for billions of years and can provide insight in the past functioning of our planet. Specifically, these model ecosystems can provide information pertaining the main natural mechanisms controlling carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere as well as insight in major structural and ecological processes in modern and past ecosystems. Moreover, microbialites deposits are characteristic reservoirs of multiple recent oil discoveries (e.g., subsalt reservoirs) revealing their global scale and economic importance. Finally, microbialite research plays a pivotal role in the emerging field of astrobiology.
The coaching project shall be highly ambitious and shall target the unprecedented integration of interdisciplinary information at increasing spatial and temporal scales. The experience and expertise of an international coach shall provide the opportunity to set up a long-term scientific group with a top expertise in the large and competitive field of geobiology. Specifically, the coach shall provide streamlines to increase the impact potential of recent recruitments in the hosting team. Indeed, several researchers within the Biogeosciences Research Unit conduct research on fossil and modern microbialites with a broad focus on sedimentology, (bio)geochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, geomicrobiology, and mineralogy. Their main objectives are: (1) to refine the understanding of microbial mat and microbialite formation in modern sedimentary environments, using analogical and natural models; (2) to better understand the physical and biological factors involved in their preservation; (3) to highlight the importance of microbial structures over geological times (e.g. fossilization processes, geochemical cycles, …)
