Assistant Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology or Paleobotany - The Field Museum, Chicago, IL

The Field Museum invites applications for an Assistant Curator in the fields of Invertebrate Paleontology or Paleobotany. This term position has a probationary period of 3 + 3 years; after successful promotion to the Associate level it is renewable every 7 years, according to the Field Museum’s Policy Statement on the Curatorial Ranks. The start date for the position is on or after January 1, 2022.

The Field Museum's Geology Section has a record of scientific excellence in collections-based research, with current strengths in phylogenetic systematics, functional morphology, paleoecology, macroevolution, history and philosophy of biology, meteoritics, and cosmochemistry. Our Fossil Invertebrate and Paleobotany collections are world class. The Fossil Invertebrate collection is focused on the Paleozoic of the Midwest with significant collections of the Pennsylvanian Mazon Creek Lagerstätte, Devonian fossils from the Falls of the Ohio area, Silurian reef fossils from the Chicago area, and Paleozoic echinoderms. The Paleobotany Collection contains significant holdings of Late Carboniferous fossil plants preserved as compression-adpressions, permineralized peats, and within sideritic concretions. Cretaceous through Paleogene floras are well-represented, including angiosperm mesofossil assemblages from the Upper Cretaceous Raritan and Magothy Formations. Substantial fossil palynological collections and comparative extant pollen and spore preparations are also housed within the Collection.

We are seeking a collegial individual with strong communication skills who conducts innovative, integrative research that will complement and broaden the section’s strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an externally funded field and/or laboratory research program, to contribute to building and using the Invertebrate Paleontology or Paleobotany collections, and to participate in Museum exhibition, public outreach and education, and programmatic efforts. We particularly value a commitment to equity and inclusion in the context of museum-based research, curation, education, and outreach. Close relationships with local universities provide opportunities for participation in graduate and undergraduate training. A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline must be held by the start of employment.

Position in Paleobotany at the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin

The Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin is currently hiring for a paleobotanist. This is basically equivalent to a curator position in other museums, with research and collections-based duties, and a ’tenure review’ after two years. Fluency in German would eventually be required as part of the job, but non-speakers are strongly encouraged to apply and will not be disqualified.

The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin provides an excellent research environment. It houses comprehensive and excellent palaeobotanical collections as well as an herbarium, state-of-the-art laboratories for palaeontological preparation, 3D-visualization (including its own CT scanner), histology, molecular genetics and computation. Numerous independent research groups are working in a wide range of research fields including palaeobiology, evolutionary biology and biodiversity research.

Assistant Professor Paleontology - Colgate University, New York

The Department of Geology at Colgate University invites applications for a tenure-stream position in the area of Paleontology at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning fall semester 2020.

We seek an individual with a Ph.D. who is committed to excellence in teaching and research at the undergraduate level. Completion of the Ph.D. is expected prior to or shortly after the date of hire. The area of specialization is open but could include invertebrate or vertebrate paleontology, paleobotany, micropaleontology, paleoecology, or paleoclimatology. The successful applicant will teach introductory courses for non-majors, an intermediate-level Paleontology course for majors, as well as develop upper-level courses in their area of specialty. Participation in the Geology Department's summer field courses and meaningful involvement of undergraduates in research are expected. All Colgate faculty are expected to participate in all-university programs, including the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum.

Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Paleontology (University of Manitoba)

The Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning as early as January 1, 2019 in the general area of paleontology. We especially welcome applicants with research interests in micro-paleontology, invertebrate or vertebrate paleontology, paleobotany, or ichnology, which are applied to areas such as biostratigraphy, biogeography and paleoecology. A focus on significant biotic events and their relation to Earth history, including evolutionary originations and extinctions in response to environmental changes, is an asset. Particular attention will be given to candidates that complement on-going research and teaching activities in the Department. Qualified applicants must have a proven record of excellence in research and the potential for excellence in teaching. The successful applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in paleontology and Earth history/global change, and establish an internationally recognized, externally funded research program. Additional teaching may include courses in introductory geology and field methods.
