Project description
The postdoc is part of the Dahl research group whose overarching goal is to understand the co-evolution of life and the environment through Earth history. The successful candidate will be embedded in an international and interdisciplinary research environment with a mix of field geologists, experimental geochemists and theoretical geophysicists. The research within this initiative will be carried out in collaboration with researchers at University of Copenhagen and international collaborators.
The purpose of the project is to quantify the influence of vascular plants on atmospheric O2 and/or CO2 levels during the early colonization of land (440-400 million years ago). The research will be mainly to construct a process-driven numerical model that quantifies the influence of roots on physical and chemical weathering processes. The project may include (but is not restricted to) quantification of soil depth, solute transport in the soil, nutrient runoff and/or aerobic O2 consumption as a function of physiological properties. In the longer perspective, the plant-soil weathering module should be integrated with global vegetation and climate models.
The postdoc’s duties will include research within terrestrial ecology and Earth system science as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties. We expect the successful candidate to cooperate on joint publications with collaborators and members our research group and contribute to publications and activities.

The position is funded for 16 months by the Danish Research Council's ERC programme aiming for extension hereafter. The key tasks as a postdoc at SCIENCE are:

Formal requirements
We seek dedicated and self-motivated candidates with an academic background in a relevant field, e.g. theoretical geophysics/terrestrial ecology/biogeochemistry/earth science, with strong numerical modeling skills an ability to simplify complex problems, and have a track record of scientific excellence. We prefer candidates with a special interest in the history of life and the environment and/or in "geoengineering" prospects of using land plants for future climate mitigation. Good English language skills are necessary. As criteria for the assessment of the candidate’s qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications in international peer-reviewed journals, coding skills, grade-point average, relevant work experience and other professional activities.
