Research Asistant/Lab Manager- Dartmouth Microbiology

Dartmouth College, Department of Earth Sciences is seeking a Microbiology Research Assistant and Laboratory Manager. The position is to perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects, independently conduct and analyze experiments and provide general lab support and maintenance. they are looking for someone with a love of anaerobes, chemostats, and geomicrobioogy and/or microbial geochemistry. An interest in energy metabolism and/or stable isotopes is also a plus!

Skills & Knowledge Required: 
-Highly organized, detail-oriented, responsible for assigned outcomes. 
-Excellent verbal and written communication abilities. 
-Ability to multi-task, and maintain laboratory in professional manner. 
-Strong computer skills, including experience with word-processing, database, and other relevant programs. 
-Ability to work independently within a multi-disciplinary and multi-user research environment. 
-Ability to travel occasionally for conferences or to work in collaborating labs. Minimum Experience: -Two years of laboratory experience in relevant field. 
-Experience in aerobic and anaerobic microbial culturing, maintenance and associated analytical techniques. 
-Experience in providing instruction in use of laboratory equipment. 
-Experience in sterile operations and storage techniques. 
-Experience with implementation and enforcement of lab safety protocols. 
-Experience with continuous (chemostat) culturing is a plus.

Minimum Education: Masters Degree, or a Bachelor’s degree with at least two years of laboratory experience in relevant field.

Key Accountabilities:
Lab Managerial
-Oversee and ensure ongoing operations of all equipment, including contact and coordination with service personnel as necessary 
-Maintain records of equipment performance and maintenance, for full range of biology and analytical (geo)chemical laboratory items 
-Independently maintain laboratory supply inventories to respond to user needs 
-Provide training of facility equipment to all users, and serve as resource for any user problems or assistance with experimental protocols

Research Assistance
-Plan and perform continuous culturing experiments in support of research projects in lab based on knowledge of scientific theory. Interpret and perform basic analyses of results. 
-Plan to perform the following tasks: Static and continuous Archaeal and Bacterial culturing, both aerobic and anaerobic, metabolite and biomass sampling and preservation, and metabolite analysis. 
-Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research. 
-Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral individuals. 
-Maintain detailed and organized records of experiments and outcomes in electronic lab notebooks. 
-Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals. 
-Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. 
-Help orient and train new staff or students.
